Student e-Portfolio Feasibility Study

About | Informational Meeting Announcement | Timeline | Executive Summary | More Info & Examples

The LTDE Feasibility Study examined the use of electronic portfolios in higher education, programs that other universities are doing, and the interest in and possible use for e-Portfolios on this campus.

About The Study

Electronic portfolios for students are used in higher education for a variety of purposes ranging from a repository for students resumes to a collection of student work documenting that they have achieved the outcomes for their academic programs.

DoIT is interested in how electronic portfolios (e-Portfolios) might be useful on this campus and how they might be an integral part of the My UW-Madison web portal. The focus of this feasibility study is student portfolios, however, consideration of faculty teaching and research portfolios and staff portfolios will be included.

Carol Schramm of DoIT’s LTDE will be working with Kathleen Paris, OQI Consultant to conduct the needs assessment and feasibility study to answer such questions as:

  1. How are other institutions of higher education using e-Portfolios? What are best practices?
  2. What are the implications of the School of Education’s work on e-Portfolios for students? How much of the SoE process, methodology, format, technology is transferable to other schools and colleges?
  3. What is the level of interest on this campus around e-Portfolios?
  4. What can be done to ensure that schools and colleges interested in e-Portfolios can learn from what has already been developed here and elsewhere without starting from scratch?
  5. What human and technological resources are required for e-Portfolios?

These and other questions will be addressed in the feasibility study that begins June 1st and is expected to be completed by mid-October, 2002.

A second deliverable of the e-Portfolio project is an R & D model documenting the way that technical innovations that impact teaching and learning can be
evaluated, developed and disseminated.
