Podcasting -- Delivering Materials
to Students
access iTunes Music Store
- Before you start, make sure you have iTunes installed on your computer.
You may install the most recent version at the following link:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
- Enter your Learn@UW course using the following URL:
https://learnuw.wisc.edu
- Locate your course in the appropriate category (2006-spring, 2006-summer,
or 2006-fall) and click on it. This will bring you to your course
homepage.
- There will be a Podcasting "widget" on your homepage as
shown above.
- Click on the Visit Course Podcast in iTunes link
in the widget. This will open iTunes and bring you to the UW-Madison
iTunes page shown below.
- Under Courses, click on the course name to enter
your iTunes course space as shown below.

editing course info
- The iTunes course space allows for introductory information on the
course and links to relevant documents in the Links
box.
- Click Edit Page in the Links
box.

- Click the Edit button.
- Make changes.
- Click OK.
- Click on End Editing in the Links box.
adding tracks
- Inside the Links box, click on Upload Files
link.

- Click the Add Tracks icon near the top of your screen
- Inside the Upload to Podcast area, click
on the Choose File (Mac OS X) or Browse
(Windows) button.

- Locate the file to upload. Click Choose (Mac OS
X) or Open (Windows) button to select the file.
- Once upload is successful, the uploaded file should appear in the tracks list.
- Repeat steps 2 through 4 for each file to be uploaded.
- Click on the "Return to iTunes" icon at the top of the
screen to return to iTunes.
changing course picture
- Inside the Links box, click on Edit Page
link.
- Click on the pencil icon in the lower right of the image.
- Click on the Choose File (Mac
OS X) or Browse (Windows) button.
- Locate the file to upload. Click Choose (Mac OS
X) or Open (Windows) button to select the file.
- Once upload is successful, a Finished message should
appear at the top of the screen.
- Click on the "Return to iTunes" link at the top of the
page to return to iTunes.
deleting files
- Click on the Upload Files link listed under the
Links box.
- Select track(s) you wish to delete by clicking in the box to the left of track name.
- Under the Move Selected to select, Trash.
- To empty trash of deleted file(s), click on the Trash
tab at the top of the track list and then click the Empty Trash
icon at the top of the screen.
change uploaded file attributes
- Once a file is uploaded, its attibutes, such as author and title,
cannot be changed.
- To make changes, click Get Song button, next to
the song. This will download it to iTunes.
- Find the song in the Library and select it.
- Choose File | Get Info and choose the Info
tab.
- Make changes and click OK.
- Return to the Music Store category.
- Under Current Tracks section, click on the Choose
File (Mac OS X) or Browse (Windows) button.
- Locate the file to upload. Click Choose (Mac OS
X) or Open (Windows) button to select the file.
- Once upload is successful, a Success message should
appear at the top of the screen.
- Click on the "Click here" link at the top of the
page to return to iTunes.
subscribing to a podcast within iTunes
- Inside the iTunes Music Store course space, there is a Subscribe
button in the heading porting of the page.
- Clicking Subscribe button will add an entry to
the course podcast to the Podcast folder within iTunes.
- Click on Podcasts under Source
list in iTunes.
- Files should be displayed. If files have not been downloaded yet,
click on the Get button.
setting up podcasting preference
- Choose Edit | Preferences, then chosoe the Podcasting
tab.

- Set Check for new episodes box to Every
day.
- Set When new episodes are available to
Download most recent.
- Set Keep to All episodes.
- Click OK.
setting up iPod to download podcast
- To change iPod podcast settings, connect your iPod to the computer.
- Choose Edit | Preferences, and click iPod.
Click the Podcasts tab.

- Follow the instructions below:
- To automatically update your iPod or iPod mini with all the podcasts
in your Podcasts playlist, select "Automatically update all
podcasts."
- To automatically update your iPod or iPod mini with only selected
podcasts, select "Automatically update selected podcasts only,"
and then select the podcasts you want to transfer.
- To limit the number of episodes that are automatically transferred
to iPod, choose "All episodes," "Only checked
episodes," "Only most recent episode," or
"Only unplayed episodes" from the Update
pop-up menu. If you choose "Only checked episodes,"
uncheck the episodes you don't want to transfer in the Podcasts playlist.
- To transfer podcasts and individual podcast episodes manually from
your iTunes library to your iPod or iPod mini, select "Manually
manage podcasts." Then drag podcasts or podcast episodes
from the Podcasts playlist to iPod in the Source
list.
- If you connect and update your iPod, and then add podcasts or podcast
episodes to your iTunes library that you want to add to your iPod,
choose File | Update iPod.
subscribing to a podcast within Juice
- Download Juice from juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/download/
- Install application.
- Launch Juice.
- Click on the Subscription tab.
- Click on the Add New Feed
button

- Paste in the URL provided inside your iTunes course space (above
the Subscribe button) into the URL
box.
- Enter a name for the Podcast in the Title box.
- Click Save.
downloading podcast to media players using Juice
- Using the Scheduler feature in Juice, podcast subscriptions
will be checked at a given time. New files will be downloaded and
transferred to iTunes or Windows Media Player.
- Choose Tools | Scheduler.

- Click Enable Scheduler box.
- Select Check at Specific Times radio button to
specify an exact time for podcast subscriptions to be updated. Enter
exact time.
- Select Check at regular Intervals radio button
to specify the frequency up update checking.
- Click Save
- Choose File | Preferences (Windows) or Juice
| Preferences (Mac OS X) and select the Player
tab.
- Select the desired player under the Choose a player
section.
- Click Save.
downloading podcast to non-ipod mp3 players using Juice
- As each mp3 player has different procedures for transferring files
from the computer to the mp3 player, check the player's documentation.
- Juice can be configured to send podcasted materials to a specific
directory by choosing File | Preferences (Windows)
or Juice | Preferences (Mac OS X) and select the
General tab.

- Click Browse button and navigate to the directory
from which the mp3 player files reside.
- Click Save.
- Files will be downloaded to this location. Synchronize files to
MP3 player as specified in player documentation.
download audacity
- Navigate to http://audacity.sourceforge.net/.
- Click Download Audacity 1.2.3 for Microsoft Windows
or Other downloads for Mac.
- Choose appropriate link under Recommended Download.

- Click on one of the icons in the Download column
to download Audacity
- Save file to the Desktop.
install audacity
Windows XP
- Locate Audacity Setup file on your computer on
the Desktop and double-click on it.
- Click Next to start the install wizard.

- Click "I accept the agreement" radio button and
click Next.
- Click Next after reading the information screen.
- Choose C:\Program Files\Audacity\ as the
install location.
- Place checks in both boxes in the Select Additional Task
window and click Next.
- Click Install
- Click Finish when install is complete.
Mac OS X
- Locate the Audacity folder on the Desktop.
- Click and drag the folder into the Application
folder.
installing mp3 export tool
Windows XP
- Go to the LAME
download page.
- Choose one of the LAME links. They are all the
same, so just choose one.
- Save the file to the Desktop

- Extract File to the Desktop by right clicking on
the lame-3.96.1 file and selectong Open
With WinZip.

- Drag the LAME folder to the C:\Program
Files\Audacity\Plug-Ins
folder.

- The first time you use the "Export as MP3" command
inside Audacity, you will be asked where lame_enc.dll
is saved. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Audacity\Lame\Plug-Ins
folder and locate lame_enc.dll.
Mac OS X
- Go to the LAME download
page.
- Download the version of LameLib for Mac OS X to
the Desktop
- Double-click on the LAMELib-Carbon.sit icon
to expand it.
- Click and drag the file LameLib to the
Audacity folder inside the Applications
folder.
The first time you use the "Export as MP3" command,
Audacity will ask you where LameLib is saved. Navigate
to the Application | Audacity folder
and locate LameLib.
edit mp3 clip
- Open Audacity.
- Click File | Open.
- Navigate to the MP3 file you would like to edit and click Open.
remove clips
- Use the Selection Tool to highlight the part of
the track that you would like to remove.
- Click Delete.

fade in / fade out
- Use the Selection Tool to highlight the part of the track that you
would like to fade.
- Select Fade in or Fade out from
the Effect menu.

add multiple tracks
- Select Project | Import Audio.
- Navigate to and highlight the file you would like to add as another
track.
- Click Open.

export to mp3 format
- Select File | Export as MP3.
- Type in a File name. Avoid long file names and
spaces.
- Click Save.
- IMPORTANT: Enter Title, Artist
and Genre information. This information
is important for content to be properly labeled and displayed inside
iTunes. *Note: if you have worked with this file before, you may need
to select Project | Edit ID3 Tags....
Try to title the track appropriately. The title is the only track
that will scroll if is is longer than what can be displayed on an
iPod. Also, envision how tracks will display in a menu. Try to put
episodic numbers at the beginning of the title, not the end.

- Click OK.
